The work up for auction (which likely depicts the Orvin Valley near Bienne, a region of Switzerland he painted on numerous occasions) is a characteristic example of the landscape painting of Philippe Robert, an artist deeply connected to the depiction of nature and the Swiss Alpine world. The monumental scale of the mountains, which dominate virtually the entire composition, is combined with a pronounced stylization of their contours and a distinctive color palette based on blues, pinks, ochres, and greens. Through a fragmented and distinctly visible brushstroke, Robert transforms the terrain into an almost ornamental pattern, while the vast sky, small architectural features, and flowers in the foreground lend depth and scale to the landscape. This synthesis of nature observation and decorative simplification constitutes one of the most recognizable features of his artistic language, also present in his celebrated studies of Alpine flora and the Jura Mountains.

Philippe Robert was a Swiss painter, illustrator, and glass artist. His deep fascination with nature shaped his entire career, notably in his botanical illustrations for *Flore alpine* (1907), *Feuilles d’automne* (1909), and *Fleurs du Jura* (1910–1911), in which he combined naturalistic precision with ornamental stylization. At the same time, he produced a significant body of landscape work, inspired by his travels through Switzerland, Italy, Greece, England, and Egypt. Beginning in the 1910s, he participated in national exhibitions and also turned his hand to allegorical, religious, and monumental painting. Among his major commissions were the murals at Wildermeth Hospital (1922) and the Bienne train station (1923), as well as various frescoes and stained-glass windows for Swiss churches during the 1920s. His work is characterized by a unique synthesis of observation of nature, chromatic intensity, and a decorative sensibility, particularly evident in both his Alpine landscapes and his botanical studies. A significant collection of his work is currently housed at the NMB Nouveau Musée Bienne, an institution that, together with the Fondation Collection Robert, serves as the primary center for the study of this family of artists.
