Javier Vázquez is a Spanish artist whose career has been consolidated from a solid academic background and an artistic practice marked by research. He graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Faculty of Cuenca, in 2010. From his early years, Vázquez showed a particular interest in light, neon, LED and light devices and in the technical processes associated with graphics and the repetition of forms, concerns that consistently run through his entire production.
His work is characterized by a non-conformist attitude and a continuous desire to evolve, which in recent years has led him to integrate painting with research processes in materials and industrial technologies. Particularly significant is the incorporation of laser cutting to generate micro-perforations invented by the artist himself, which he adapts to the field of figuration through accumulations of shapes. In some pieces, these micro-perforations are combined with LED lighting, intensifying the perceptual dimension of the work and underlining the relationship between image, space and visual experience.
Since 2009, Vázquez has participated continuously in solo and group exhibitions in galleries, museums and international contemporary art fairs. His work has been present in spaces and events of reference in Spain -Madrid, Barcelona, Cuenca, Bilbao or San Sebastian- and in a wide international circuit that includes cities such as Miami, New York, San Francisco, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Bogota, Cartagena de Indias, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Strasbourg or Mykonos. He has had solo exhibitions in galleries such as Trama (Barcelona), Rarity Gallery (Mykonos), OMA (São Paulo) or Fang Gallery (Cuenca), and has participated in prestigious fairs such as JustMad, Art Miami, Art Rio, SWAB Barcelona, Art Lima, Art Cologne or Hong Kong Art Fair, among many others.
At the same time, his work has been recognized with numerous awards and distinctions, including the first and only international graphic art award of the city of Cuenca (Contornos), the first prize of the XXIV Certamen de Artes Plásticas de Albacete and the Pilar Citoler Foundation award for the work What if we die tomorrow? In addition, his work is part of important institutional collections, such as the Royal Academy of History and Art of San Quirce and the Banco Sabadell Foundation.
