In the catalog of the exhibition "Tribute to the Geniuses" it is pointed out that Manuel Terán proposes the return of painting as a symbolic strategy, articulated through tributes that adopt the form of pastiches without being so. This work dedicated to Alexander Calder is inscribed in this line, understood not as a literal quotation, but as a respectful evocation of his legacy. Terán does not reproduce the language of the honored artist, but reinterprets it from his own point of view, activating a conceptual rather than formal resonance.
Terán's interest in Calder is linked to personal admiration and to the American artist's ability to expand the traditional boundaries of art, incorporating movement, balance and space as essential elements. This homage adds up to a deliberately heterogeneous constellation of referents, where affinity does not respond to stylistic or chronological categories, but to a direct relationship between artists. In this sense, his practice confirms E. H. Gombrich's assertion that there is no such thing as art, only artists, and calls into question conventional aesthetic classifications.
A Chilean artist living in Spain, Manuel Terán, a graduate in Fine Arts, has developed his career in the field of plastic arts and new technologies applied to art. Since his appearance in 1995 at the Salón de Otoño del Círculo de Bellas Artes in Santiago de Chile, he has had solo exhibitions and participated in group shows and fairs in Latin America and Europe. His work has been recognized with several awards, among them the one granted by the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia in 2004.
