Manhattan (2026) is a fundamental piece of the mature production of Diego Cáceres. Executed in the dynamic collective workshop "La Máquina", this large format work stands out for its marked verticality, a formal quality that enhances the monumentality and dynamism of the central figure. Framed within the Neo-Expressionism of urban roots, the canvas becomes a scenario of visual friction where oil paint and photographic collage merge in an indissoluble way.
Influenced by the expressive rawness of German New Objectivity (George Grosz, Otto Dix) and the hostile atmosphere of hardboiled literature, Cáceres models an unstructured physiognomy through a vibrant palette dominated by orange tones, fiery reds and dense blacks. The energetic strokes, the controlled drips of gray paint and the rough textures configure a body that seems to gesticulate violently. Anchoring the figure to the pulse of the modern metropolis, the creator organically integrates fragments of reproduced images of skyscrapers and the iconic structure of a New York suspension bridge at the upper and lower ends.
Diego Cáceres began his artistic career fascinated by the language of comics and the historical avant-garde (Picasso, El Bosco, Van Gogh), discovering a definitive link in the work of the master Alberto Breccia. After studying for four years at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires and refining his academic technique in the workshop of Ignacio Sosa, he moved to Barcelona in 2001, turning his career exclusively towards material painting.
His passage through the shared workshops of Nave 1 in 2009 consolidated his own rigorous style. His background, nourished by pictorial references such as Antonio Berni, Miquel Barceló or Kirchner, and by the expressionist cinema of the interwar period, is reflected in an urban, dirty and abrasive imaginary. With a solid international career, he has exhibited his creations at the Atelier Vanntarnet (Oslo), exhibitions of raw expressionism in Buenos Aires and avant-garde galleries in Barcelona (such as the Centre Cívic Baró de Viver, the Darío Siguismondo Gallery or El Niu).
