On this occasion, the artist draws inspiration from one of the most iconic images created by Andy Warhol: his famous series dedicated to Mao Zedong, based on the Chinese leader’s official portrait, which was mass-produced in the well-known Little Red Book. By appropriating this image of enormous political and symbolic significance, Warhol transformed an icon of power into an artistic and media object, questioning the boundaries between propaganda, celebrity, and visual culture.
Far from simply reproducing the original model, Terán establishes a contemporary dialogue with one of the most influential works of Pop Art. The image of Mao, transformed by Warhol into a global icon through the use of intense colors and techniques typical of mass reproduction, reappears here reinterpreted through painting, affirming the relevance of this medium as a space for reflection on art history and the persistence of images in the collective memory. The work retains the visual power and recognizable character of the original reference, but incorporates a personal reading that transcends mere aesthetic quotation.
As noted in the catalog for the exhibition Tribute to the Geniuses, Terán proposes “the return of painting as a symbolic strategy.” His tributes do not aim to imitate or slavishly reproduce the masters he admires, but rather to establish a conversation with them from the present. The diversity of artists included in the series—from Francis Bacon to Joan Miró, including René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol—demonstrates a free and personal approach to art history, unbound by stylistic or chronological categories. Each work thus becomes an exercise in recognition and reinterpretation.
