DESCRIPTION

TERÁN (Chile, 1974).
“Tribute to Warhol,” Tribute to Geniuses series, 2023.
Oil and acrylic on canvas.

Measurements: 60 x 60 cm.
The work Tribute to Warhol is part of the Tribute to the Geniuses series, a project in which Manuel Terán pays homage to some of the most influential artists in the history of contemporary art. On this occasion, the Chilean painter takes as his starting point one of the most iconic images of the 20th century: the portrait of Marilyn Monroe immortalized by Andy Warhol, which has become a universal symbol of Pop Art and mass visual culture.

The series Tribute to the Geniuses is built precisely on this idea of a dialogue between artists from different eras. As the exhibition catalog notes, Terán proposes a return to painting as a symbolic strategy, creating works that evoke admired creators without falling into mere copying or pastiche. His interest lies not in reproducing the styles of others, but in establishing connections with those artists who have shaped his artistic training and sensibility. In this context, Warhol occupies a central place for having redefined the boundaries between high art and popular culture, transforming everyday images into icons of global significance.

A graduate in Fine Arts and a resident of Spain for decades, Manuel Terán has developed an international career characterized by artistic experimentation and a constant dialogue with the major figures of modernity. From his first exhibitions in Chile in the 1990s to his most recent projects in Europe, his work has moved between figuration, the reinterpretation of historical images, and reflection on the very act of painting.
