In this work, Manu Muniategiandikoetxea reworks a page from a January 1999 calendar with the image of Batman and Robin, appropriating an icon of popular culture and shifting it into the realm of painting. The composition retains the calendar’s graphic structure—numbers, letters, industrial printing—but the energy of the black line introduces a gestural layer that completely alters its interpretation.

The artist works with a preexisting image, situated somewhere between a comic, a poster, and an everyday object. The heroic figure is suspended between collective visual memory and manual intervention, in a tension that is highly characteristic of contemporary practices that intersect painting, the archive, reproduction, and popular iconography.

The choice of Batman functions not only as a pop culture reference but also as a reflection on the repeated image, the visual myth, and the construction of the modern hero. Muniategiandikoetxea transforms an ephemeral medium—a calendar—into a unique piece, highlighting the contrast between time, visual consumption, and the pictorial gesture.

Manu Muniategiandikoetxea is a Basque artist born in Bergara in 1966. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Basque Country and has developed a body of work centered on painting, sculpture, and reflection on the contemporary image. He has exhibited at venues such as the Sala Rekalde in Bilbao, and his work is included in collections such as the Reina Sofía Museum, ARTIUM Museoa, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
