BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ISABEL CID (Barcelona, 1934–2009).
“Ruptura,” 1994.
Oil on canvas.
Signed, dated, and titled on the reverse.
Measurements: 120 x 135 cm.

A large-scale work from Isabel Cid’s mature period, “Ruptura” condenses the geometric, architectural, and industrial vocabulary through which the artist developed one of her most personal artistic languages during the 1990s.
The title of the work reflects a visual interpretation of the intersection, interruption, and displacement of forms. Far from presenting a purely rational abstraction, Cid transforms architecture and industrial elements into a psychological space. The artist herself explained that her evolution took her from painting linked to external reality toward a more internal expression, articulated through modules, conduits, cylinders, and geometric structures.

Self-taught and a student of the painter, critic, and historian Rafael Benet, Isabel Cid began a promising career at an early age. She exhibited at the Syra Gallery in Barcelona and the Biosca Gallery in Madrid, and was awarded a medal at the Alexandria Biennale. During the 1960s, she lived and exhibited in Germany—in cities such as Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Darmstadt, and Kiel—and later lived in Mexico. In the late 1980s and, especially, during the 1990s, she reemerged on the Spanish art scene with a mature, diverse body of work marked by distinct originality.
