Art & Language is considered one of the most important and controversial groups in 20th-century conceptual art. Its legacy lives on in the collections of major international institutions such as the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the MACBA in Barcelona.
Created in 2002, this piece encapsulates one of the group’s fundamental lines of inquiry: the questioning of the boundaries between image, language, and artistic representation. The work belongs to the collective’s mature period, when its members revisited the pictorial tradition from a critical perspective, analyzing the codes that determine how we view and understand a work of art.
In the late 1960s, when much of Western art was beginning to question the traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture, one of the most influential and radical collectives in contemporary art emerged in England: Art & Language. Founded in 1967 by Terry Atkinson, Michael Baldwin, David Bainbridge, and Harold Hurrell, the group was born out of a revolutionary idea: that art did not necessarily have to take the form of an object, but could exist as a reflection, a discussion, or a system of thought. The collective’s name comes from the magazine *Art-Language*, launched in 1969, which became one of the leading theoretical forums for international conceptual art. Their early works took forms far removed from traditional formats. Instead of canvases or sculptures, they presented texts, diagrams, archives, documents, and conceptual structures that invited viewers to reflect on how artistic meaning is constructed. These pieces challenged the authority of institutions, museums, and critics, asking who decides what art is and why. During the early 1970s, the collective expanded its activities with the addition of American artists such as Joseph Kosuth and Mel Ramsden, which fostered dialogue between the British and New York conceptual art scenes. This expansion established Art & Language as one of the key figures in the international conceptual art movement, alongside artists such as Lawrence Weiner, Robert Barry, and Joseph Kosuth.
