"Sublimació de l’amor" is a series created by Lluís Cots at a particularly significant juncture in his career and presented that same year in his solo exhibition at the Maeght Gallery in Barcelona. Its inclusion in this series and its direct connection to that exhibition allow it to be precisely situated within the artist’s body of work.

Cots constructs the composition through the tension between gesture, material, and a barely suggested figuration. The very title of the series directs this painting toward an emotional realm without imposing a specific narrative interpretation. Cots transforms this idea into pictorial energy: warm color envelops the composition, while dark centers concentrate and channel its intensity. This coexistence of gestural impulse and figurative evocation is particularly representative of the abstract-figurative language that defines his work.

Active since the early 1970s, Lluís Cots has developed a career marked by an exploration of material, gesture, and the expressive possibilities of painting. He exhibited early on at the Crecelius Gallery in Tarragona, the Da Barra and Subex galleries in Barcelona, and later at venues such as the Maeght Gallery (Barcelona, 1984), the Sala Cajamadrid (1988), as well as in Berlin and at the Lina Davidov Gallery in Paris (1999). His work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions in various European countries
