“Estela Polaris” exemplifies Xavier Rodríguez Navinès’s interest in translating images derived from his own experience—and previously captured through photography—into painting. The work is based on a snapshot taken aboard the French schooner Estela Polaris during a voyage the artist made between Fuerteventura and the island of Sal in the Cape Verde archipelago. This photographic origin determines both the immediacy of the composition and the abundance of visual information, which is subsequently transformed into pictorial material.

Xavier Rodríguez Navinès has been active as an artist since the mid-1990s in the fields of painting, illustration, and sculpture. He trained with Joan Capella and later at the Escola Joso and the Escola d’Arts Aplicades i Oficis Artístics Llotja in Barcelona, in addition to becoming affiliated with the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. Throughout his career, he has participated in exhibitions and artistic projects in Barcelona, Tossa de Mar, Cape Verde, and other locations, as well as in projects related to the reconstruction of the central dome of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
