BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Portuguese caravel of the first half of the 20th century.
Silver and silver gilt and enamel filigree.
With hallmarks on the reverse.
Weight: 220 g.
Measurements: 17 x 16 x 8 cm.
Caravel made of silver and gilded silver, with enameled details, raised on a silver base. It is a ship with four masts and jib, with sails unfurled and swollen by the wind from the bow, with all the details represented with care and attention to detail.
The caravels were light sailing ships used in transoceanic voyages throughout the 15th and 16th centuries and especially known for having been the ships used by Christopher Columbus on his voyage to America. From the mid-sixteenth century and throughout the seventeenth century, caravels began to be replaced by other types of ships such as galleons, with more cargo capacity and resistance.
