These sculptures represent a pair of guard dogs cast in Portuguese silver 833, a high quality alloy common in Portuguese goldsmithing. The pieces, made in Porto between 1938 and 1984, exhibit a remarkable balance between expressive strength, technical refinement and symbolism. Both figures stand on a molded base of coated wood, which serves as a visual and functional pedestal, underlining their ornamental and protective character.
The animals, represented in a seated position and with an upright gaze, transmit a powerful static presence, in which vigilance is combined with nobility. Their detailed, sculpted anatomy reveals pronounced ribs and defined muscles that suggest an aesthetic ideal of fidelity, endurance and perpetual alertness. Studded collars reinforce their symbolic role as guardians, evoking both their taming and restrained strength.
Silverware has occupied a prominent place in the history of Portuguese art since the Middle Ages, being especially appreciated for its technical quality and iconographic diversity. Over the centuries, Portugal developed a strong tradition of both religious and civil goldsmithing, benefiting from colonial trade and a demanding aristocratic clientele. The silversmiths' houses in Lisbon and Porto were fundamental centers for the production of works that combined utility, luxury and symbolism, as demonstrated by this sculptural ensemble.
Jewelers and goldsmiths since 1870, Ourivesaria Sarmento was founded by João Joaquim Rebello. It produces and markets a wide variety of silver, gold, costume jewelry and filigree pieces. Throughout six generations, it has continued to preserve the heritage, the brand and the family values that have always characterized it over the last 150 years. As a Portuguese reference in the sector, respected both inside and outside the country, Casa Sarmento offers a wide range of products of excellent quality and variety, combining traditional and contemporary pieces, handcrafted in noble metals, metal pairings, with and without precious stones.
