Set of twelve silver cutlery pieces. In the first decades of the 20th century, Spanish silverware developed in a context still dominated by historicist models. The survival of styles such as neo-baroque or neo-renaissance responded both to the weight of tradition and to the demand of a clientele linked to the Church, the aristocracy and the high bourgeoisie. However, the advance of industrialization and the progressive incorporation of Spain into the European cultural circuits brought about a slow but significant stylistic renovation. From the first decades of the century, and more clearly in the interwar period, influences of modernism and, later, of art deco began to be introduced. These currents manifested themselves in a greater simplification of forms, in the use of curved or geometric lines and in a renewed attention to the design of everyday objects, such as cutlery, jewelry and decorative pieces.
