Andrew Fogelberg was a prominent silversmith initially registered in 1773 as a specialist in plate work in London's Soho. Between 1780 and 1793, he consolidated his prestige through a fruitful partnership with Stephen Gilbert, operating from his workshop in Church Street. His production is distinguished by a classicism of refined elegance, whose hallmark was the integration of small cameo-style medallions. These pieces were replicas of famous gems produced by the artist James Tassie, whose reproductions enjoyed extraordinary success in London at the end of the 18th century. Of probable Swedish origin, Fogelberg transferred to his designs a decorative sobriety that also enjoyed great popularity in his native country. His work is currently preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
