DESCRIPTION

Grandfather clock. England, London, c. 1690.
Oak wood frame; gilt bronze; "seaweed" marquetry.
Signed: "Samuel Delafosse Soho London".
Measurements: 262 x 51 x 28 cm.

Imposing grandfather clock that stands out not only for its size, but also for the complex marquetry of the "seaweed" type, a design in the manner of marquetry patterns composed of very fine elements that resemble seaweed or chicory leaves; it was popular in England for a brief period of time (approximately 1690 to 1715), often accompanied by scrolls and arabesques.

The dial, signed by Samuel Delafosse, a French watchmaker based in London in the late 17th century, is made of engraved brass and features a date function at six o'clock.
