BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Portico clock; France, c. 1850.
Wood, bronze and brass.
No pendulum.
Measurements: 51 x 32 x 14 cm.
The portico clock became popular in France around the middle of the 19th century for its combination of practical function and decorative value. Inspired by classical architecture and neoclassical taste, this type of clock took the form of a small temple or portico, with columns.
The expansion of the bourgeoisie and the growing attention for furniture and luxury objects for the home favored its diffusion. Portico clocks became central elements of domestic decoration, especially in living rooms and libraries, where they reflected cultural refinement and knowledge of European trends. In addition, their popularity was reinforced by the excellence of French workshops, which combined mechanical precision and elaborate decorations in gilded bronze, marble and enamel, turning each piece into an object of collection and social status.
