BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Desk clock; France, Empire period nineteenth century.
Mercury gilded bronze.
Preserves pendulum and key.
Signed "Maltensan à Paris",
Measurements: 40 x 25 x 12 cm.
The piece stands out for the quality of the modeling, the precision of the anatomical details and the extraordinary conservation of the gilding, which preserves a warm and deep luminosity. The composition is articulated around the enameled sphere, flanked by a male figure of classical inspiration, dressed in a short tunic and carrying a vessel, a direct evocation of the Greco-Roman world so admired during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. The body presents an elaborate ornamental program with trophies, garlands and reliefs on the base representing classicist scenes, reinforcing the erudite and heroic character of the Empire style.
This type of clock arose in a context in which time, power and classical culture became inseparable symbols. Intended for palaces, official offices and representative salons, these clocks not only measured the hours, but also affirmed status, taste and adherence to the imperial ideals of order, grandeur and historical continuity.
