DESCRIPTION
English grandfather clock, 18th century.
Ebonized wood case with chinoiserie decoration in gold tones.
Brass dial signed "Robt Huggins, London".
Ben general condition, with punctual losses and own marks of the passage of time.
Measurements: 250 cm. height.
Elegant English grandfather clock (longcase clock) of the eighteenth century, with ebonized wood case richly decorated with inlaid and painted motifs of oriental inspiration, characteristic of the chinoiserie taste widespread in English watchmaking of the period. The structure has a molded base, a slender body with an arched central door and a top with a curved pediment flanked by pinnacles turned.
The door of the body is ornamented with delicate landscape scenes and fantastic architectures, while the base shows a country composition, all done in golden tones on a dark background, creating an attractive decorative contrast.
The dial features Roman numerals. The whole responds to the refined design of 18th century English clocks, in which mechanical precision is combined with a careful ornamental elaboration intended for domestic representation pieces.
