DESCRIPTION

Mercury gilded bronze.
Suspension of silk thread.

Elegant table clock in mercury gilt bronze, a technique characteristic of French clockmaking production in the first decades of the 19th century. The body of the clock adopts a cylindrical shape with a slightly conical profile, a compositional solution of neoclassical taste that refers to the vocabulary of Antiquity so recurrent in the decorative arts of the Napoleonic period. The case rests on a circular stepped base supported by four spherical feet, and is delimited at its upper and lower ends by finely chiseled geometric braided moldings.
The dial, integrated into the front of the cylinder and framed by a ring also decorated with braided motif, has Roman numerals on a gilded background with chiseled grid. Below the dial, a cartouche in relief develops a motif of crossed lyres between laurel branches, an allusion to the arts. The finial is the most attractive element: a seated child figure, dressed in an old-fashioned draped tunic with small folds and curly hair tied back with a diadem, appears absorbed in reading an open book that she holds on her knees. The figure embodies the enlightened and romantic ideal of the studious woman, evoking perhaps a muse, Calliope or simply a young reader.
