DESCRIPTION
Table clock, 20th century.
Patinated sheet metal.
The movement needs servicing.
The pendulum and bell are missing.
Measurements: 73 x 39.5 x 19 cm.
A sculptural table clock made of patinated tinplate, with a monumental design. The piece is mounted on a richly ornamented architectural base featuring plant motifs, volutes, moldings, and curved legs, at the center of which sits a circular dial with Roman numerals on a blue and white enamel background. Rising above the body of the clock is a classically inspired female effigy, accompanied by a child figure.
The piece stands out for its marked theatricality and the historicist style characteristic of decorative clockmaking from the late 19th century and early decades of the 20th century, although in this case it is cataloged as a 20th-century piece. The greenish patina reinforces the appearance of antique bronze and accentuates the reliefs on the base and panels.
The decoration of the base, the contrast between the enameled dial and the metallic patina, and the verticality of the upper section reflect the bourgeois taste for tabletop pieces conceived as small domestic monuments.
