The combination of sculpture and mechanism makes this pendule a representative example of French historicist taste from the late 19th century. The body of the clock, conceived as an architectural structure adorned with classical panels and ornaments, is flanked by a young woman holding a book and a small Cupid carrying a flowering branch. The scene can be interpreted as an allegory of romantic reading, a theme well-suited to the narrative and ornamental nature of mantel clocks.

The white dial, featuring Roman numerals and openwork hands, is signed “Bulliman, 22 rue du Helder,” an inscription linking the piece to the Parisian watchmaking trade. The stepped green marble base provides chromatic hallmarks and visual stability to the ensemble, while the palmette frieze, the turned feet, and the abundant drapery all evoke the Louis XVI decorative repertoire. The combination of gilded metal, marble, and an enameled dial was characteristic of French decorative clocks and their later historicist reinterpretations.
