DESCRIPTION
Table clock; France, Empire period, nineteenth century.
Mercury gilded bronze.
Measurements: 48 x 31 x 11 cm.
This French table clock from the Empire period is a representative work of the refinement of mercury gilt bronze, a technique that has disappeared today due to its complexity and toxicity, reserved in its time for luxury objects for the political and social elites. Conceived as a sculptural and symbolic piece, the whole responds fully to the aesthetic ideology of the Napoleonic Empire.
The composition is articulated in a theatrical and balanced way. The central body of the clock, richly chiseled with scrolls, garlands and vegetal motifs, is flanked by allegorical figures, carefully modeled and of remarkable anatomical quality. These figures reinforce the imperial discourse of heroism, discipline and glory, values that Napoleon wanted to associate with his regime through the decorative arts.
Clocks like this arise in a very specific historical context: the rise of the French Empire, when art becomes a tool of political and social representation.
