BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

RAMON MARTÍ ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826–1894).
“Landscape.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 60 x 120 cm; 67 x 127 cm (frame).
The composition is characterized by a sweeping view of the surroundings, in which the landscape takes center stage through a careful arrangement of natural elements and a harmonious integration of small human figures that lend scale and dynamism to the scene. Particularly noteworthy is the deep observation of nature, characteristic of nineteenth-century realism, as well as the treatment of the sky, the changing effects of light, and the atmosphere. The brushwork, free and expressive in character, together with the tonal variations and surface textures, helps convey a sense of naturalness and spatial depth. The work reflects the artist’s interest in plein air painting and his ability to capture nature without idealization,
Ramon Martí Alsina was a key figure in Spanish Realism and one of the great innovators of 19th-century Catalan painting. Trained at the Escola de la Llotja, where he later served as a teacher and professor, he championed direct observation of nature and exerted a profound influence on artists such as Joaquim Vayreda, Modest Urgell, and Francesc Torrescassana. His trips to Paris allowed him to become acquainted with contemporary French painting and, in particular, the realism of Gustave Courbet. He won a third-place medal at the 1858 National Fine Arts Exhibition and a second-place medal in 1860 for *Landscape of Catalonia*. His works are held in institutions such as the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
