DESCRIPTION
RICARD MARTÍ AGUILÓ (Barcelona, 1868–1936).
“Landscape.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 59.5 x 50 cm; 83.5 x 75 cm (frame).
The work depicts a coastal scene at dawn, with sailboats sailing serenely in front of rocky cliffs covered in vegetation. The composition reflects Ricard Martí Aguiló’s interest in depicting natural landscapes and capturing atmospheric and lighting effects. In keeping with his training and his connection to the Catalan realist tradition, the work is notable for its naturalistic treatment of the elements, attention to detail, and the creation of depth through the gradation of planes and tones.
Ricard Martí Aguiló was a Catalan painter, the son of the renowned artist Ramon Martí Alsina, whose career was linked to the realist tradition of Barcelona painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He trained at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona and in his father’s studio. He participated in various exhibitions and art competitions, including the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. Throughout his career, he received several awards, including the gold medal at the 1895 Plants and Flowers exhibition, the bronze medal at the 1896 Barcelona Art Exhibition, and a second medal at the Spanish National Exhibition held in Mexico in 1910. His documented works include *Lady with Carnations*, *Seascape*, *Flowers*, *Rural View*, and *Calella Train*. His works are primarily found in private collections, though some are also held by the Museu d’Història de Barcelona (MUHBA) and the Argentona City Hall.
