DESCRIPTION
RICARD MARTÍ AGUILÓ (Barcelona, 1868–1936).
“Landscape.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 60 x 51.5 cm; 84 x 75 cm (frame).
The work depicts a riverside landscape, featuring tall-crowned trees that dominate the foreground. The composition is rounded out by a small stream and the presence of discreet human figures on its banks, which lend scale and life to the scene. Stylistically, it falls within the tradition of 19th-century landscape realism, with influences from plein air painting and the French school. Notable features include loose brushwork, pronounced textures, and a cloudy or twilight atmosphere.
Ricard Martí Aguiló was a Catalan painter, the son of the renowned artist Ramon Martí Alsina, whose career was linked to the realist tradition of Barcelona painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He trained at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona and in his father’s studio. He participated in various exhibitions and art competitions, including the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. Throughout his career, he received several awards, such as the gold medal at the 1895 “Plants and Flowers” exhibition, the bronze medal at the 1896 Barcelona Art Exhibition, and a second medal at the Spanish National Exhibition held in Mexico in 1910. His documented works include *Lady with Carnations*, *Seascape*, *Flowers*, *Rural View*, and *Calella Train*. His works are primarily found in private collections, though some are also held by the Museu d’Història de Barcelona (MUHBA) and the Argentona City Hall.
