CHRISTEN NIELSEN OVERGAARD (Denmark, 1851–1929)
“Portrait with Flowers.”
Oil on panel.
Signed.
Measurements: 56 x 45 cm; 74 x 63 cm (frame).
A composition by the Danish painter, decorator, and glass artist Christen Nielsen Overgaard, whose work emerged during a period of particular interest in reviving the great artistic traditions of the past. The work depicts a figure framed by an exuberant floral composition, following an ornamental tradition long established in European painting, particularly associated with the 17th-century Flemish school.
Its primary reference is the composition *Garland Surrounding the Virgin Mary* by the Flemish Baroque painter Nicolaes van Verendael (1640–1691), created between 1640 and 1660 in oil on copper plate, measuring 81 x 65 cm and cataloged under inventory number P001419. This genre, which combines a central figure with an elaborate garland of flowers, became widely popular during the Baroque period, especially in the Southern Netherlands, where collaboration between figure painters and still-life specialists gave rise to compositions of extraordinary visual richness. The revival of these Baroque models enjoyed particular popularity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when artistic historicism and an interest in the Old Masters fostered the reinterpretation of ornamental repertoires from earlier periods.
Christen Nielsen Overgaard began his training as an apprentice to the painter C. C. A. Weber in Copenhagen and later studied at the Technical Institute and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts between 1870 and 1879, completing his training in Vienna under the decorator Pietro Isella. He traveled through Austria, Turkey, and Egypt, experiences that enriched his ornamental repertoire. He was highly active as a teacher and decorator, participating for decades in the reconstruction and ornamentation of Frederiksborg Castle. He also carried out significant decorative work for Copenhagen’s Marble Church, City Hall, and various religious buildings. He participated in international exhibitions such as those in Paris in 1889 and Chicago in 1893, and was honored as a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog. His work is represented in the collections of the National History Museum at Frederiksborg Castle.
