JOSEP SARQUELLA ESCOBET (Llagostera, Girona, 1928 – Palamós, Girona, 2000).
“Coastal Scene.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner,

A Catalan painter and watercolorist with Impressionist roots, he began his artistic training under the painter Francesc Vidal Palmada and later completed it at the Círculo Artístico and the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc in Barcelona, the city to which he moved in 1949. He held his first solo exhibition in Palamós in 1958 and, from then on, maintained an active exhibition schedule in Catalonia, Madrid, France, the Netherlands, and Santo Domingo. He received various awards and honors, and in 1999 he was honored by the Salón de Mayo in Barcelona. His painting, characterized by a nimble, luminous, and spontaneous brushstroke, focuses primarily on seascapes, landscapes of the Costa Brava, and scenes of everyday life.
His work is represented in the Artistic Heritage Collection of the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Port 2000 Collection in Barcelona, and the Francesc Galí Legacy Municipal Art Gallery in Palamós; in addition, two nautical-themed compositions are housed in the Spanish Royal Household.
