BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

UTAGAWA TOYOKUNI (Japan, 1769–1825).
“Album of Prints of Kabuki Actors and Theater Scenes.”
86 color prints.
They show signs of wear and have been restored.
Measurements: 30 x 27 x 3 cm.
A collection of 86 color prints on paper, bound in an album. The prints depict actors and scenes from the traditional Japanese Kabuki theater, with characters portrayed through elaborate costumes, theatrical compositions, and cartouches featuring inscriptions, signatures, and seals. The collection offers a broad iconographic repertoire linked to one of the most popular expressions of Japanese urban culture during the Edo period, in which the portraiture of actors and the depiction of dramatic episodes achieved remarkable artistic development. The compositions are part of the ukiyo-e tradition, or “pictures of the floating world,” a genre of prints that disseminated images of actors, courtesans, landscapes, and scenes of daily life among the Japanese public.
Utagawa Toyokuni was a prominent Japanese artist of the Edo period and one of the leading figures of the Utagawa school of ukiyo-e printmaking. A disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu, he achieved great acclaim for his prints of kabuki theater actors, in which he excelled in capturing the expressiveness of the faces, the dynamism of the poses, and the richness of the costumes. His work played a decisive role in establishing theatrical portraiture as one of the most popular genres of Japanese printmaking and exerted a notable influence on subsequent generations of artists in the Utagawa school.
