PHILIPPE STARCK (Paris, 1949) for Disform.
"Wendy Wright" Chair. First edition.
Black metal.
In very good condition.
Measurements: 75 x 49 x 49 cm.
Designed in the late 1980s, the Wendy Wright emerged in a context in which Starck openly questioned the strict rationalism of modernism and proposed, instead, a more ironic and emotional approach to furniture. The name itself, which evokes Anglo-Saxon characters and certain literary imagery, is part of a strategy he frequently employs in his work:
Starck is the son of André Starck, an aeronautical engineer who has often inspired Philippe’s work. He studied at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris. While working for Adidas, Starck founded his first industrial design firm, Starck Product, which he later renamed Ubik, in honor of Philip K. Dick’s novel, and began collaborating with manufacturers in Italy (Driade), Alessi, Kartell, and internationally, including Drimmer in Austria, Vitra in Switzerland, and Disform in Spain. In 1983, then-French President François Mitterrand, on the recommendation of his Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, chose Starck to renovate the president’s private apartments at the Élysée Palace. The following year, he designed Café Costes. Starck’s body of work expanded to include furniture, interior design, architecture, street furniture, industrial design (wind turbines, photo booths), bathroom fixtures, kitchens, floor and wall coverings, lighting, household appliances, office equipment such as staplers, utensils, tableware, clothing, accessories, toys, glassware, graphic and editorial design, food, and vehicles for land, sea, air, and space.
