DESCRIPTION
Medieval situla; Spain or Italy, 14th century.
Bronze.
Measurements: 27 x 14 x 11 cm.
The piece features a movable metal handle, secured by two mounts topped with animal heads—a design element that links the vessel’s functionality to a long-standing ornamental tradition in medieval art. The body features figurative reliefs arranged beneath arched bands, with religious depictions that, based on their iconographic identification, may represent the Virgin Mary and the four Evangelists. The decorative borders and possible Latin inscriptions complete a visual program that combines liturgical function with the expression of Christian doctrine.
This type of vessel has its roots in early medieval situlae, notably the famous 10th-century Situla of St. Gotthard, associated with the Ottonian artistic tradition. During the Middle Ages, these objects took on a prominent role in liturgical furnishings, where the richness of their decoration helped to enhance the solemnity of ceremonies. The combination of sacred figures, archways, and animal motifs reflects the continuity of ornamental repertoires that, adapted to different eras and workshops, remained relevant throughout the centuries.
The situla is a vessel designed to hold holy water used in Christian liturgical ceremonies, especially during the sprinkling of the faithful.
