BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flemish School; c. 1600.
“The Virgin with Saint Anne, the Child, and Saint John the Baptist.”
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 55.5 x 43.5 cm; 66 x 55 cm (frame).
The gathering of Saint Anne, the Virgin, and the Child follows the iconographic tradition of the Anna Selbdritt, a term of Germanic origin used to describe depictions of Saint Anne alongside Mary and Jesus. This type of composition, widespread in Northern European art since the late Middle Ages, gained particular popularity during the Renaissance, when scenes of a familial and devotional nature allowed for the expression of the human dimension of sacred history. The inclusion of the child Saint John the Baptist broadens the composition’s meaning, establishing a connection between Christ’s childhood and his future redemptive mission. One of the painting’s most significant elements is the lamb beside the Infant Jesus. This animal refers to the Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God, a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice and the redemption of humanity. The presence of Saint John the Baptist, who points toward the Savior, reinforces this interpretation, as it alludes to the words from the Gospel in which the precursor identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God. This establishes an iconographic dialogue between the two children that foreshadows the events of the Passion from the innocence of childhood. Of particular interest is also the monumental fountain located to the right of the composition. Designed in the Renaissance style, it is richly ornamented, with a classically inspired architectural structure and a gilded figure at its crown. Its presence introduces an allegorical and ornamental dimension that enriches the composition as a whole.
From a stylistic standpoint, the painting belongs to the Flemish tradition of the late 16th century, which drew upon the legacy of the great masters of the Northern Renaissance. During this period, painting in the Low Countries maintained a close relationship with Italian figurative culture, gradually incorporating elements of the Renaissance vocabulary—such as spatial perspective, architectural monumentality, and the revival of classical motifs—without sacrificing the descriptive precision and attention to detail characteristic of the local tradition. This coexistence of Italian influences and northern sensibilities is particularly evident in this composition. The main figures are arranged in an orderly manner and their faces are idealized in the manner of the Renaissance tradition, while the landscape and architectural elements reveal meticulous attention to the depiction of the surroundings. The ornamental fountain, the garden, and the buildings in the background highlight the artist’s interest in integrating the classical repertoire into a scene of profound Christian significance.
During the final decades of the 16th century, Antwerp established itself as one of Europe’s most important artistic centers. Its intense commercial and cultural activity fostered the circulation of prints, drawings, and models from both Italy and other European territories. Flemish painters incorporated these influences into their own artistic language, developing religious compositions intended for both the ecclesiastical sphere and private collections.
