BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Japanese Imari plate. Meiji era, ca.1900.
Hand painted ceramic.
Signed on the reverse.
Measurements: 5.5 x 37.5 x 37.5 cm.

Decorative plate, of ceremonial origin, made of Japanese Imari pottery. It belongs to the Meiji period, which was characterized by a large production of porcelain and decorated ceramics, often destined for export: maintaining the rich traditional patterns but with influences that reflected Japan's openness to the world.

Hand-painted, it demonstrates the craftsmanship and detail typical of high quality Imari production. Iron red is the main color, used for the clouds and floral details. Cobalt blue is subtly used for details. Gold or orange glaze for the geometric patterns, with white being the base color providing a high-contrast background for the vibrant decoration.

The dense pattern of stylized clouds, peonies, chrysanthemums and foliage in rich shades of red and orange, with touches of gold, stands out. The design is continuous and enveloping, creating a brocade feel. Large medallions contain detailed figurative and landscape scenes.
