Sishi Lion Kakiemon style. Arita, Japan. Edo period, 18th century
Glazed porcelain.
In very good condition according to its age.
Measurements: 39 x 21 x 30 cm.
Figure of a guardian lion, known in Japan as shishi, made in Arita porcelain during the Edo period.
The sculpture presents the animal in a seated position, with a lively expression and protective character. The head, of great expressive force, shows prominent eyes, marked eyebrows and open mouth revealing the fangs, features intended to convey apotropaic energy. The modeling is compact, with a formal balance that suggests its function as an interior decorative figure or symbolic protective element.
The decoration responds to the language of the Kakiemon style, developed in Arita from the 17th century onwards and characterized by bright enamels applied on a milky white background. This piece shows a rich palette applied with remarkable ornamental freedom. The body is covered by a pattern of polychrome polka dots and enamel reliefs, providing a rare decorative dynamism of great visual appeal.
Unlike the earlier and more sober Kakiemon, here the treatment is more exuberant and three-dimensional, suggesting an 18th century production within the late evolution of the style, when zoomorphic figures acquired greater expressiveness and decorative complexity.
The guardian lion figures in Arita porcelain were highly prized both in Japan and in the export market, especially for their combination of protective symbolism and ornamental appeal.
