DESCRIPTION

Lucerne; Rome, High Imperial period 27 BC - 284 AD.
Terracotta.
Measurements: 3 x 10 cm.
This type of lucerne from the High Roman Empire is an excellent example of the combination of domestic functionality and religious symbolism characteristic of ceramic production between the first and third centuries A.D. More than a simple instrument of illumination, these pieces were part of the Roman daily universe, but they could also acquire a votive or ideological value, especially when they incorporated divine representations such as that of Mercury.
The term "lucerna", from the Greek lychnos, designates these lamps used to illuminate both private and public interior spaces. During the imperial period, their production reached a great standardization and diffusion throughout the Roman territory, becoming one of the most common objects of daily life.
The piece is part of the ceramic tradition of the Roman Empire (27 B.C. - 284 A.D.), a time when the mold manufacturing allowed a massive and highly decorated production. This system consisted in the use of matrices for the upper and lower parts of the lucerne, in which the clay was pressed before being assembled, thus achieving more detailed surfaces and more complex iconographic motifs.
The main motif of this lucerne is the figure of Mercury, Roman divinity of commerce, travelers, eloquence and exchanges. His presence not only provides an ornamental value, but also a symbolic one, since Mercury was considered a god protector of economic activities and communication. In this context, the lucerne can be understood as an object that, in addition to illuminating, invokes protection and prosperity in everyday life.
