DESCRIPTION

JAVIER MARISCAL (Valencia, 1950), for Moroso
“Alessandra” Armchair, designed in 1995.
Internal steel frame and polyurethane foam, upholstered in multicolored fabric with wooden legs.
Measurements: 112 x 98 x 98 cm.

The “Alessandra” armchair is a prime example of the renewal of contemporary design through a more playful, expressive approach that draws closer to the language of art. True to the creative personality of the Valencian artist, the piece transcends the functionality of furniture to become an object with a strong sculptural presence, where form, color, and imagination take center stage.

Mariscal, one of the most influential Spanish creators of recent decades, developed his own visual universe beginning in the 1980s, characterized by a synthesis of design, illustration, architecture, and popular culture. His collaboration with Moroso, an Italian firm renowned for its ties to leading international designers, gave rise to pieces that challenged the traditional boundaries of furniture, embracing a more emotional and narrative aesthetic. The armchair we are presenting perfectly reflects this philosophy through an enveloping and organic silhouette, conceived with comfort in mind but also with a clearly expressive intent. Its curved forms and gentle character evoke the tradition of late 20th-century Italian design, while incorporating Mariscal’s personal vision, marked by humor, vibrant color, and the reinterpretation of everyday objects.

“Alessandra” belongs to a particularly significant moment in contemporary Spanish design, when designers such as Mariscal helped position Spanish design on the international stage through proposals that moved away from strict rationalism and toward an understanding of the object as an aesthetic experience. The armchair up for auction thus represents the convergence of art and design—a collector’s piece that encapsulates the creative freedom and innovative spirit that define Javier Mariscal’s career.

Javier Mariscal is one of the most recognizable Spanish creators on the contemporary international scene. A multidisciplinary artist and designer, he has worked in illustration, furniture, graphic design, interior design, animation, and urban projects. His artistic language, rooted in Mediterranean culture and pop culture, gained widespread recognition with Cobi, the mascot of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. In the field of furniture design, his collaboration with Moroso resulted in pieces such as “Alessandra” and “Saula Marina,” both from 1995.
