DESCRIPTION
ETIENNE ALEXANDRE STELLA (France, ¿-1892).
"Allegory of winter", 1880.
Patinated bronze.
Signed on the base.
Measurements: 97 x 34 x 29 cm.
The winter has been transfigured in this sculpture in a maternity that evokes the cold season. The protagonist is a young woman dressed with a mantle or shawl that partially covers her, with an expression of serenity or recollection, and a child who is wrapped in the clothes, reflecting the stillness of winter. The bronze artist skillfully reinterprets the technique of wet cloths, so that the fine fabric adheres to the body modeling it while draping naturally where the limbs fold in graceful gestures.
The sculptor Etienne Alexandre Stella exhibited at the Salon between 1878 and 1885. He specialized in the realization of plaster figures representing historical figures or genre scenes. The only bronze statue presented at the Salon was "Spring" in 1881.
