This angel figure, conceived as an integral part of a Baroque altarpiece ensemble, is depicted in a frontal, ceremonial pose that suggests a role of accompanying or exalting the main image on the altar. With a childlike appearance and bent legs, it adopts a flying or suspended posture, well-suited for integration into the dynamic architecture of the altarpiece, possibly as a holding or accompanying figure.

Her attire, marked by elaborate decorative fantasy, combines a feathered headdress, an embossed breastplate, a pinafore with broad, undulating contours, and tall, ornate boots. The flower held before her chest and the garland of foliage surrounding her waist accentuate her ornamental character. The embossed work, executed with fine linear motifs on the gilding, enriches the surface of the fabrics and creates a careful contrast with the light skin tones.

The figure embodies the scenographic sensibility characteristic of 18th-century Portuguese sculpture, when sculpture, architecture, gilding, and polychromy were conceived as parts of a single visual unity. Angels of this type could be incorporated into altarpieces as bearers of attributes, lamps, or other liturgical elements, or as secondary figures intended to reinforce the theatricality and devotional impact of the ensemble.

The liveliness of the face, the dynamism of the apron’s contours, and the richness of its polychromy allow us to appreciate the piece not only as a decorative element but also as an independent testament to the refinement achieved by Portuguese religious sculpture workshops during the 18th century.
