Belonging to the Antwerp School, one of the most prominent artistic centers in the Netherlands during the 17th century, this work is a triptych whose central panel depicts the Adoration of the Shepherds, an episode narrated in the Gospel of Luke in which the humble shepherds journey to Bethlehem to pay homage to the Infant Jesus after receiving the angels’ announcement. The scene is organized around the figure of the Child, whose body radiates a supernatural light that draws the gaze of all those present and underscores the theological significance of the event. The side panels feature the figures of Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Dominic of Guzmán, two saints of particular importance to the spirituality and tradition of the Church. Their presence broadens the devotional scope of the work, establishing a link between the mystery of the Nativity and models of holiness and Christian contemplation. Both are depicted in isolation and with solemnity, as intercessors who accompany the faithful in their meditation on the main scene.
Stylistically, the triptych reflects characteristic features of the Antwerp school and highlights a preference for complex narrative compositions, in which the figures are grouped around a clearly defined visual axis and actively participate in the construction of the narrative. Likewise, the marked contrast between light and shadow intensifies the emotional impact of the scene and directs attention toward the essential elements of the depiction. The dramatic atmosphere, the rich color palette, and the meticulous rendering of faces, fabrics, and objects reveal the influence of the Baroque sensibility that dominated the city’s artistic production during the 17th century.
The painting also highlights the renowned technical quality of the Amberin workshops, famous both for the skill of their painters and for the excellence of the materials used. Notably, they routinely used oak panels—a support particularly valued for its durability and stability—which has contributed to the preservation of numerous Flemish works to this day.
