DESCRIPTION
Modernist planter on a pedestal, ca. 1900.
Glazed ceramic in shades of maroon and green with a gradient effect.
Base decorated with three winged lions.
It has some glaze loss in one area of the lower base and slight wear.
Measurements: 113 cm high x 60 cm maximum diameter.
Large in size and with a striking sculptural presence, the planter features a fluted bowl with a globular profile, raised on a triangular pedestal. The intense maroon glaze is nuanced with green glazes and drips, which accentuate the reliefs and add chromatic depth to the surface.
The base consists of three winged lions modeled in the round, whose outstretched wings and stylized forms are integrated into a fantastical decorative motif. This repertoire of medieval-inspired motifs, combined with the organic treatment of the forms and the richness of the glazes, places the piece within the historicist and ornamental language of Modernism around 1900.
