BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Jug, "Neptuno" model; MANUFACTURA PICKMAN, Seville, c. 1900.
Glazed earthenware.
It has slight chips along the edges of the base.
It has an incised mark on the base.
Measurements: 89 x 40 x 34 cm.
Glazed earthenware jug corresponding to the "Neptuno" model, produced by the prestigious Manufactura Pickman in La Cartuja, Seville, around 1900. A very similar piece is preserved in the collection of the Museum of Popular Arts and Customs in Seville, which highlights the significance and representativeness of this model within La Cartuja’s production.
La Cartuja de Sevilla was founded in 1841 by Marquis Charles de Pickman, who arrived in the city with the idea of establishing a new factory for fine earthenware of the highest quality to compete with the dominance of English brands. From the factory’s founding in 1841, Charles Pickman introduced innovative manufacturing methods, such as importing raw materials, using molds, employing specialized machinery like mechanical arms and presses, hiring English specialists, and drawing on the founder’s extensive ceramic expertise—all of which contributed to the factory’s initial success. There are virtually no two identical pieces at La Cartuja de Sevilla. The complex production process and the artisanal quality characteristic of this century-old factory result in unique and one-of-a-kind pieces.
