Carlos Páez Vilaró was a Uruguayan artist noted for his work as a painter, sculptor and muralist, recognized for a vibrant style influenced by Afro-Uruguayan culture and candombe, with intense colors and expressive forms; largely self-taught, he traveled through Africa and America incorporating these influences into his work, and is especially famous for creating Casapueblo, a sculptural construction in Punta Ballena that functioned as his home-workshop and today is a museum and cultural symbol of Uruguay.
