BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

FRANÇOIS CHATAIN; France, 20th century.
Table lamp, 1980.
Glazed ceramic.
In excellent state of preservation.
Measurements: 90 x 70 cm (diameter).
Table lamp of great format, of notable sculptural presence, designed in France by the artist and designer François Chatain. This unique piece stands as an eloquent testimony of the aesthetic quests of French design in the late twentieth century, boldly combining shapes, materials and color. The base, made of glazed ceramic, presents a structure of juxtaposed semicircular volumes, decorated with dynamic and chromatically intense geometric patterns. The palette, which includes deep red, vibrant yellow and emerald green, not only accentuates the expressive character of the composition, but also recalls the visual explorations of the Memphis movement and certain reminiscences of postmodern decorative art that defined the 1980s.
Topped by a conical shade in matte black, whose formal sobriety establishes a deliberate contrast with the polychrome base, the lamp achieves a visual balance between exuberance and restraint. Its formal configuration and chromatic treatment make it a strongly symbolic piece, which transcends mere functionality to place itself in the realm of the artistic object.
François Chatain is recognized as one of the most talented designers of his generation, and his creations are appreciated for their refined aesthetics and high quality. His designs are characterized by a minimalist and functional approach, in which form and material are at the service of functionality. He works with a variety of materials, such as wood, metal and glass, to create luminaires that are both elegant and simple. In 2012, he founded his own lighting brand, Studio Chatain, with which he has won several awards and exhibited at prestigious design fairs in France and abroad.
