BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

FEDERICO CORREA (1924–2020) & ALFONSO MILÁ (1924–2009).
Set of four “Castelló” chairs, 1970s–1980s.
Bamboo and wicker.
In very good condition.
Measurements: 80 x 53 x 50 cm.

Set of four chairs made of bamboo and wicker, corresponding to the “Castelló” model, designed by Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá. The pieces feature a lightweight, enveloping structure made of curved bamboo canes that form the armrests, backrest, and legs, combined with woven wicker surfaces on the seat and circular backrest.

The design stands out for its organic and Mediterranean character, based on the use of natural materials and a functional, comfortable, and visually light approach to furniture. The circular backrest, crafted using a highly precise geometric weave, serves as the set’s defining feature, lending it a distinct formal identity and a striking decorative quality. The seats, also woven, maintain the same artisanal quality and reinforce the aesthetic unity of the four pieces.

The warm tone of the bamboo, combined with the natural luster of the plant fibers, enhances the chairs’ visual appeal and allows them to blend seamlessly into both contemporary settings and interiors with a vintage or naturalistic aesthetic. Their strength lies in the combination of functionality, structural lightness, and an iconic appearance, capable of bringing character and warmth to any space.

The architectural and design duo Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá, both born in 1924, were among the most prominent figures of the Modern Movement in the second half of the 20th century. Correa and Milá adhered to the principle that interior design and industrial design were integral parts of the same architectural project. As collaborators with José Antonio Coderch, they founded their own studio in 1953. Their work includes the architecture of summer homes in Cadaqués, institutional and residential buildings, sports stadiums, factories, and offices; interior design for the legendary restaurants FlashFlash and Il Giardinetto; and unique, iconic design pieces to furnish their own projects and for furniture companies such as Gres.
