The “Corona” armchair is one of the most recognizable designs by Poul M. Volther and of mid-20th-century Danish furniture. Originally conceived in 1961 and marketed beginning in 1964, the original model was produced by Erik Jørgensen and is currently part of the Fredericia catalog. Its unique structure is inspired by the elliptical shapes formed during solar eclipses, translated into four “floating” upholstered cushions mounted on a chrome-plated steel column.
This set is a later edition or replica inspired by that model, incorporating the characteristic arrangement of independent upholstered sections and the radial metal base. The red leather upholstery intensifies its sculptural and decorative presence, while the footrest completes the set’s functional role as a lounge chair.
Poul M. Volther was a Danish architect and designer, trained in the Scandinavian functionalist tradition. He worked for FDB Møbler and later served as a distinguished professor at the Danish School of Art & Design. His work is characterized by a quest for balance between ergonomics, structural clarity, and formal expressiveness, with the “Corona” armchair being his most celebrated creation.
