17th century German school

German school of the 17th century.
"Virgin and Child.
Carved wood, gilded and polychrome.
Presents losses in the polychrome and cracks.
Measurements: 83 x 35 x 33 cm.

On the lunar crescent as an Immaculate, the Virgin holds the Child in her arms, both submerged in a golden aura that represents the glorification of the Christian religion. In this work we can appreciate this influence in the monumentalization of the figures and in the movement that describes the body of the little Jesus.

The Germanic sculpture of the 17th century was strongly influenced by the Baroque and the Counter-Reformation, which led to a rich polychrome, estofado and chromatic richness in the works. It was characterized by the search for movement, dynamics and tension, especially with helicoidal or serpentine lines, and a multiplicity of planes and points of view. Statuettes of alabaster and ivory, as well as monumental knightly saints stood out.
