Juan Pedro Somoza known artistically as Juanpe Somoza has consolidated an artistic career deeply linked to contemporary sculptural language. His practice is based on a particular fascination for metals, especially steel, a material that he manipulates with mastery to give it forms charged with poetic meaning and emotional resonance. In his work, matter and concept intertwine in a delicate balance between the physical forcefulness of the support and the expressive subtlety of the artistic gesture.
Three-dimensionality is not in his case a mere formal resource, but a way to establish sensory and symbolic links between the piece, the space and the viewer.
One of his most emblematic series to which this work belongs, entitled Pajaritas, is an intimate evocation of childhood and a tribute to the small family rituals that shape our affective memory. Inspired by the image of his mother making paper figures with a delicate gesture, Somoza transfers that fragility to the domain of metal, transforming the ephemerality of origami into enduring sculptures. Each fold is reproduced with technical accuracy, maintaining the light appearance of the original bow ties, but endowing them with a material permanence that reinforces their symbolic charge. In this series, the artist not only alludes to childhood, but also summons universal meanings associated with peace, good wishes and shared nostalgia, creating a bridge between the intimate and the transcendent.
Juan Pedro Somoza's work has been presented in several group exhibitions that demonstrate the vitality of his recent production. Among them are DIVERSIARTE (November 2024, Galería Espacio 15, Madrid), ATRÉVETE (November 2024, Galería Origen, Madrid), MIXTOS (December 2024, Gallery Riviera, Málaga), EXPO ENERO (January 2025, La Zona Gallery, Madrid), SINCRONÍA (January 2025, Galería Origen, Madrid), IMPARABLES (February 2025, Galería Origen, Madrid), and ABSTRACT TODAY (March 2025, Galería Espacio 15, Madrid).
