Following Gothic models from Mechelen.
European work of the 20th century
"Virgin and Child".
Carved and polychrome wood.
Measurements: 26 x 9 x 5 cm.
The sculpture carved in half bulk emulates in a detailed way the aesthetics of the devotional sculptures produced in the famous workshops of Mechelen (Mechelen), in Flanders (now Belgium), during the late Gothic period (late fifteenth and early sixteenth century).
The work presents the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in her right arm. Her body adopts a slight and elegant curvature in contrapposto (the "Gothic hip"), which gives dynamism to the figure. The Child, depicted in a naturalistic manner, turns towards his mother, creating a scene of tender intimacy. In her right hand, the Virgin holds what appears to be a fruit (symbol of Eve and the redemption from original sin).
The 20th century sculptor has captured with great skill the distinctive features of the original models. The face is oval, with a clear forehead and serene expression, characteristic of Flemish virgins. The clothing is rich and complex. The golden mantle, which envelops the figure, falls in deep, angular V-shaped folds, a typical late Gothic feature. The lower tunic, dark in color, is decorated with golden motifs. The edges of the garments are finely decorated with colored borders.
