A painter of international renown, Cristóbal Toral spent his childhood and adolescence in Malaga, where his family moved shortly after his birth. After beginning his training in 1958 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Antequera, in 1959 he entered the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría, in Seville. In 1962 he moved to Madrid to further his training at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, and the following year he won the gold medal at the Exhibition of Pensioned Landscape Artists of El Paular. He finished his studies in 1964, obtaining the National End of Career Award and a scholarship from the Ministry to prepare a chair at the School of Fine Arts, being soon after appointed professor at San Fernando. Since then his work has been increasingly recognized and awarded, and in 1967 he abandons teaching to devote himself exclusively to the pictorial practice.
In 1968 he obtained a grant from the Juan March Foundation, which was renewed the following year, in this case to continue his training in the United States. That same year he settled in New York. He then began his international projection, and in 1972 he held his first personal exhibition in New York, at the Staempfli Gallery. Since then he has exhibited his work in Spain, the United States, Italy, Brazil, France, Germany and Belgium, both in personal and group exhibitions and in fairs. Toral has been widely recognized nationally and internationally, and has received distinctions such as the Gold Medal of Andalusia, as well as being an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. He is currently represented in important collections in Europe and America, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Rothschild Museum in Paris, the British Petroleum in London, the Georges Pompidou Art Center in Paris, the Reina Sofia and the National Library in Madrid, the Artium in Vitoria, the Fine Arts Museums of Asturias and Vitoria, the Castillo de Larrés Drawing Museum in Huesca, the Edward A. Ubrich Museum in the United States, the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, among others.
