DESCRIPTION
Italian school; c. 1910.
"The three graces".
Carrara marble and Calacatta marble.
Measurements: 154 x 38 x 50 cm.
Executed in Carrara marble and Calacatta marble, the piece stands out for its refined carving technique and for the compositional balance achieved between symmetry, sensuality and geometric stylization.
The work represents, in a frontal and abstract arrangement, the Three Graces, figures from Greco-Roman mythology associated with love, beauty and fertility. However, far from the naturalistic representation typical of neoclassicism, here a marked stylization is chosen, typical of the Art Deco language: the faces are elongated, with clean, defined lines and soft curves that give the scene an air of elegant modernity. The frontal and compact design, framed in a vertical block, refers both to classical bas-relief and to the formal essays of modern art, anticipating to a certain extent the quests of Futurism and Cubism in their desire for formal synthesis.
This reinterpretation of a classical theme through a modern grammar is representative of the Art Deco spirit, a movement that, especially in Italy, was able to integrate the tradition of craftsmanship and sculpture with the new decorative languages of the twentieth century. The choice of Carrara and Calacatta marble is not only a gesture of fidelity to the Renaissance sculptural tradition, but also a demonstration of the technical expertise of the Italian school, which achieves subtle polishes and material hallmarks without losing the visual unity of the piece.
Beyond its formal refinement, The Three Graces offers a symbolic reading of harmony, desire and eternity, expressed not only in the mythological motif, but also in the perfect integration between matter, form and content. The work thus stands as an exceptional example of early Art Deco, in which sensuality is stylized and classical beauty is reinterpreted in a new, elegant and essentially modern language.
